Production is back in LA

FilmLA counted 5,121 on-location shoot days across Greater Los Angeles in the first quarter of 2026 — up 10.7% from the previous quarter, though still 3.3% below the same quarter a year earlier — with feature film production climbing 52.3% year over year to 687 shoot days and commercials up 35.5% quarter over quarter. California's Film & Television Tax Credit Program, expanded to $750 million a year, accounted for nearly 7% of all local shoot days in the quarter, including 21.8% of on-location feature production. For a Los Angeles-based studio, a recovering feature market means more experienced crews, more available locations, and more partners within a short drive. Directing and producing remain skilled professions with real economics behind them: the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a median annual wage of $83,480 for producers and directors in May 2024, with the top 10% earning more than $198,530, and projects 5% employment growth from 2024 to 2034 alongside roughly 12,800 openings each year.
